Today, she works as an adviser to Virgin Galactic’s Space Advisory Board. She later served as deputy director for engineering with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. She held that position through 2018, then became a principal for AstroPlanetview LLC, an Arlington, Virginia, firm. Magnus left NASA in 2012 to become executive director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the aerospace field. She returned to the space station in 2008 for a four-month assignment as a science officer and made her last flight in 2011 as one of four crew members on the final journey of Atlantis, the mission that closed the book on NASA’s shuttle program. Magnus, who earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Missouri S&T, flew her first mission to the International Space Station in 2002 aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. Admission is free, but reservations are required for in-person attendance. The talk will be held in-person and on Zoom from Leach Theatre in Castleman Hall, 10 th and Main streets, on the Missouri S&T campus.
Sandra Magnus, a former NASA astronaut who was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering, will talk about her career in engineering and space when she presents “Beyond the Horizon” at 7 p.m.
