But the Web site VersionTracker (does something similar with multiple programs, for free, whether you have a Windows PC or a Mac. Typically, by pulling down the program's Help menu, you'll quickly be directed to the site.

You can keep your other software up to date by periodically checking the Web sites of the respective manufacturers. From the Control Panel, go to System and click on Automatic Updates to specify your settings. Or, if you're running Windows XP Home Edition, you can automate things even further by directing Windows to check for "critical updates" by itself at the frequency and time of your choosing.

You can run Windows Update periodically through Microsoft Internet Explorer, which automatically detects which versions of Windows components you currently have installed and, by checking with Microsoft's site, which have newer versions available. The security vulnerabilities of Windows are legion, and this forces you to download patches and updates if you want to minimize your exposure to hackers seeking to break into your system over the Internet. It's fun to watch the technology keep tabs on itself. Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and utility suites such as Symantec's Norton Internet Security let you automatically keep crucial parts of your computer system up to date. The "joy" of computer maintenance takes many forms. when it's approached from the right perspective. But with a PC, maintenance can actually be fun.

You can't boot Windows or install it on an External USB drive or else I may have thought about it without asking for help.Normally, we think of maintenance as a chore, something we have to do to keep things running smoothly and prevent problems down the road whether with our car, house or computer.

If not at least I know I can go back to my beloved Windows 😉 without having to use boot camp or any Apple software! Just hope I can get software for it as you can for Windows. I've had the machine now for about 8 months and this was the first time I'd used it to do anything! 🙂 My main concern is that I'm unaware if there's the software I like out there for the iMac. I actually quite liked the look of it when I was using it and think I may give it a go. I've now wiped the Internal HD and the External USB HD and am going to install OS X again later today.

So thanks very much indeed for the suggestion as I now know it's possible to use the iMac as a Windows ONLY computer and the speed was great and all was fine.

From then on the iMac booted into Windows everytime and I had NO trace of OS X anywhere! 🙂Īll I then did was to run Boot Camp 3.0 from Windows and then updated it to 3.1 and after that I uninstalled Boot Camp and Apple update and some of the drivers that were not needed.Įnd result was a Windows ONLY iMac that worked like a dream! and, after a while and a cup of coffee 🙂 the computer rebooted into WINDOWS and was asking me to create an account.Īccount created, I then unpluged the USB drive and took out the set up DVD. Using the advanced settings I formatted the disk with the NTFS file system and let the set up continue.Īfter going through the complete set up and on the last reboot the screen went black and I waited and waited but nothing! After about 3 attempts at this I thought I'd wait and wait and wait. After the computer rebooted it loaded the Windows set-up and I selected the iMacs internal HD as my Windows System disk. I created ONE partiition as MBR and FAT then loaded the Windows 圆4 Installation DVD and told OS X to boot from it. So, I booted the iMac from the External USB drive and wiped the Internal HD using the disk doctor or whatever it's called 🙂 I couldn't use OS X Boot Camp on the Internal HD or External HD to make the Internal HD just a single drive for Windows as Boot Camp wouldn't allow this. I inserted the OS X install DVD and installed another copy of OS X onto a normal USB external drive. I started last evening and with OS X already on the late 2009 iMac. Thought I'd let you know that indeed your suggestion worked fine and 100% 🙂
